The Purpose of a Ladder Anchor System

Moving Beyond the Ladder As of 2018, ladder cages are no longer considered a form of fall protection. Once a climb exceeds 24 feet, ladders require a fall protection system. Workers need an active fall arrest system that travels with them, and it all starts with a reliable anchor.

The "ABC" of Ladder Fall Arrest A complete system has three essential parts:

  • Anchorage: The fixed point on the structure.
  • Body Harness: Worn by the user.
  • Connecting Device: The lifeline or lanyard that links the harness to the anchor.

Decoding OSHA & ANSI: The Rules of Ladder Anchors

  • OSHA's Mandate: Fall protection, such as a ladder anchor system, is required on all fixed ladders that extend 24 feet or more above a lower level. If the climb is divided into multiple ladder sections with platform landings between them, those landings may not be considered a “lower level” under OSHA standards. As a result, the total vertical climbing distance may still exceed 24 feet. When any section of a ladder is equipped with a ladder anchor system, the entire vertical ladder system including all sections must be protected with a ladder anchor system to ensure continuous fall protection.
  • The 5,000-Pound Rule: OSHA and ANSI require that the anchor point must be capable of supporting a 5,000-pound load per attached worker or be designed with a 2:1 safety factor.
  • ANSI Standards: Our systems meet or exceed key industry standards like ANSI Z359, ensuring the highest level of safety and reliability.

Types of Vertical Fall Arrest Systems for Ladders

Amusement-Industries

Rigid Rail Anchor Systems (Track)

An engineered metal track is attached to the ladder. A trolley moves smoothly along the track, providing a secure connection with minimal fall distance.

Cable-Lifeline-System

Flexible Cable Anchor Systems (Vertical Lifelines)

A steel cable runs the length of the ladder. A system trolley travels with the user and locks onto the cable in the event of a fall.

Ladder-System

Ladder-Mounted SRL Anchor Posts

A Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL) is mounted to an anchor post at the top of the ladder, providing fall protection during the climb and a safe transition onto the roof.

Choosing the Right Ladder Anchor

Anchorage-Equipment

Landing Platform Location

We assess the distance and position of the landing platform relative to the ladder. Extension options are available to support a safe and smooth transition from the ladder to the landing surface.

Harness-Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Different systems require different harness configurations. For example, cable or rail fall protection systems require a front D-ring harness, while a Ladder Davit system requires a back D-ring harness.

Training Requirements

Some systems involve specialized procedures and training. For instance, a Ladder Davit system may require instruction on proper use of a tagline.

End-to-End Ladder Anchor Solutions

Professional Installation and System Certification

A ladder anchor system is only safe if installed correctly. Installation must be done by a "competent person" to ensure it meets all structural and regulatory requirements. HySafe provides professional installation to certify your system is ready for use.

Inspection & Maintenance for Ongoing Safety
  • Pre-Use Checks: Users must perform a quick visual inspection before every climb.
  • Annual Inspections: A documented inspection by a competent person is required at least once a year to keep the system certified and safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a rigid rail and a cable system?

A rigid rail offers shorter fall distances and smoother travel, while a cable system can be more economical and versatile for long ladders.

Can an anchor system be retrofitted to my old ladder?

Yes, we can engineer and install a compliant fall arrest system on most existing fixed ladders.

What PPE is needed with a ladder anchor?

A ladder anchor system requires a full-body harness equipped with either a front or back D-ring, depending on the specific system design. In addition, a compatible connecting device such as a system trolley or self-retracting lifeline (SRL) with a tagline is necessary.

How do I safely get on/off the roof?

Certain system options include an extension post that allows users to remain tied off until they have safely stepped onto the roof surface. HySafe also offers ladder protector guardrail kits designed to support a secure and controlled transition from the ladder to the roof.
