Horizontal Lifeline (HLL) Systems are a smart, versatile solution for protecting workers at height. By securing a worker to a cable anchored at both ends, HLL systems enable safe and continuous movement across elevated work areas. Designed for both fall arrest, stopping a fall, and fall restraint, preventing access to fall hazards, these systems deliver dependable safety without compromising productivity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the safety requirements for a horizontal lifeline?
All systems must meet applicable OSHA standards (such as 29 CFR 1926.502, and following ANSI guidelines is strongly recommended as the industry best practice. Fall protection systems must be capable of supporting at least 5,000 lbs. per user or be designed, installed, and used under the supervision of a qualified person as part of a complete system maintaining a safety factor of at least two.
How long can a horizontal lifeline be?
Length depends on the system’s design and engineering. We regularly install lifelines longer than this. 3M recommends we keep lifelines under 400ft for optimal use. Systems may require intermediate supports or additional engineering controls.
Do temporary horizontal lifelines require engineering calculations?
Yes. Even temporary horizontal lifeline systems need to be evaluated for anchor strength, span, user weight, and clearance to ensure safe use.
How much clearance is needed below a horizontal lifeline?
Clearance varies but lanyard or self retracting lifeline length, system sag, height of worker and fall distance must all be accounted for. Each system must be assessed individually.
How often should horizontal lifelines be inspected?
Inspections should be conducted before each use and formally documented at least annually. Temporary systems should be checked daily or whenever relocated.
Can horizontal lifelines be used for fall restraint instead of fall arrest?
Yes, when properly configured, horizontal lifelines can serve as effective fall restraint systems. By limiting a worker’s movement, they can prevent access to fall hazard zones altogether. To ensure compliance and safety, this use must be clearly outlined and documented in your fall protection plan.
